When I was a student in massage school in 1991 I met a great hands on physical therapist named Theresa Schmidt at the New York State Society of Medical Massage Therapist Convention that I was attending in the Catskill mountains in upstate New York. I was so inspired by watching the way she worked that I signed up to take her Myofascial Release Four day seminar at the AMTA Massage Convention . It was the best decision I ever made. I gained a lot of insight on how to assess the body, treat specific areas, and most important to how work without causing injury to yourself. I have known Theresa for over twenty years and have taken many of her massage classes as well as benefited from one on one hands on tutorials with her. When I had ACL surgery in 1995 on my right knee Theresa was my PT and responsible for helping me recover to a full functional level. As a teacher myself in a College Massage Therapy program and a massage professional that interacts with other healthcare professionals, I encourage all my student, fellow massage therapists, physical therapists and other health professionals I come in contact with to take the opportunity to study with Theresa when she is teaching in the area. What is Shamanism?The ancient traditions of shamanism come forth from continents around the globe, a gift of healing and a spiritual way of life that has been passed down for generations. Shamanism is a practice that teaches us how to connect to our spiritual side and to Nature for guidance and to promote the well-being of all creation. Shamans use a method known as Journeying, a special type of meditative or dreamlike state in which they access information not typically accessed in ordinary reality. During the Journey, the shaman has first-hand experience in perceiving spiritual or non-ordinary information for the benefit of an individual or the community, to help with problem-solving, provide compassionate assistance, and to facilitate spiritual, mental or physical health and well-being. Shamans access compassionate Guidance from the Spiritual world, and share their knowledge with people who seek their help. Shamanism is not a religion, it is a spiritual practice that complements one’s spiritual path. Shamans use a variety of practices to promote harmony and balance, including journeying, sacred ceremony, singing, drumming, dance, and pilgrimages to power locations in Nature. For centuries, people have gathered to share sacred drumming circles, where we connect with others on the spiritual path, celebrate, share life stories, and journey together.
Anthropologist Michael Harner has published extensively on the shamanic way of life, and provides courses for practical application of shamanic traditions and practices. As a student of his Foundation for Shamanic Studies, Dr. Schmidt includes shamanic ceremony, drumming circles and journeying as part of her approach to promoting health and well-being with her clients.

Personal journey sessions are available for 30 minutes to 90 minutes. Drumming circles and group journeys usually run for 60-90 minutes.

We invite you to the June Journey Circle for shamanic journeyers! It is a great opportunity to unite with others to promote healing and access wisdom from non-ordinary reality, with our compassionate helping spirits. The Journey is a form of guided meditation with a specific intention and focus. A rotating host leads the circle each month. If this is your first time joining us, you may want to know what to expect and what to bring. We gather together (see calendar for time and date each month) in order to smudge one another (incense) and then create sacred space. Please arrive on time, so that we can build a sound container for the work. Then the journeying begins! Please bring a drum or rattle if you have one, a blanket, yoga mat, pillow, and whatever else you need to be comfortable journeying. Please bring a journal and pen to record your journeying results.
At the end of our work we enjoy snacks, so please bring anything you’d like to share. Those who can afford to donate to support the Circle will have an opportunity to do so.

Craniosacral therapy is a gentle hands-on approachCraniosacral therapy is a gentle hands-on approach to assessing and promoting wellness, using soft touch to an anatomical system known as the craniosacral system (CS) of the body.
